Week Three: Bargain Basement Blues
September 22, 2025
Three weeks into the 90-day clean-out and I came in hot! Listings flying onto Marketplace, cross-posting to Craigslist like I was running a clearance event at Macy’s. Within the first hour, I had two “interested” parties:
One was the classic “Is this still available?”…followed by ghosting.
The other? A scammer. (A Zelle scam that says something like “you are recieving payment from a business account to another business account that is not set up. You must verify by sending $500 and it will be returned to you once verified. Then the “buyer” says they will send the $500 if you promise to sent it back) Plu-Fucking-Lease!!! No way José.
So yeah, not exactly the “instant cash, instant freedom” vibe I was hoping for.
I did actually sell a Fall haul, some crafty pumpkins and shells (pics below because I KNOW you dying to see my cheesy post shots) But the rest? Sitting there. Crickets. Tumbleweeds.
I’m dumbfounded. Why no interests?? These are brand-new items I sold for way more in my gift shop at the marina, barely two miles away. Now they’re “bargain basement lots” and still not moving. Apparently, Facebook Marketplace people expect Chanel bags at Dollar Tree prices.
Meanwhile, I’ve got a dozen listings live. Every day they don’t sell is another day I’m renting out brain space to stuff that needs to go!
Tomorrow I head to So Cal for a work trip, well, “work” as in unpaid intern duties for family while I figure out my future life as a remote social media marketing manager?!?
When I get back, the plan is simple:
Separate what I actually want to keep.
Enlist help to ditch the rest.
If something doesn’t sell within a week, it’s going straight to donation.
Because honestly? The stuff is costing me more in mind clutter and actual cash (rent, storage fees) than it’s worth. Time to stop babysitting junk. I’m over it.
I told this to a close friend who went through a similar mass declutter and he said at first he was precious about his stuff, …then disassociated for a bit, then did not give one shit about the shit. I am so close to that right now.
I have made a few friend “grab bags” I put in stuff I for sure knew they would like (not just a bunch of crap) things that probably would sell, but I would rather give some nice things to friends that will adore them than make a few bucks off of “deal hunters”.
So, on tho the next week. As the days tick by I get more irritated, but also excited. The end is near, which is good, but the pressure is definitely on!
